Chapter Nine

I had been sitting on the couch for at least two hours without moving an inch. I had decided to wait until Tyler arrived at my apartment to tell him in person about my meeting with Adam. I had no idea what his reaction would be, but I was guessing that it wouldn’t be good.

I heard a knock at the door, and I knew it was him. I walked over, opened the door, and was greeted by a smiling Tyler. For a brief moment, happiness filled me as I remembered our two previous evenings together, but then I remembered that it was probably all going to go up in smoke once I informed him of what was happening.

“Hi there,” he said optimistically as he walked through the door.

“Tyler, I have something to tell you.”

“I told you I was going to bring my favorite wine, and that’s exactly what I did, it’s a –”

I interrupted him, “Tyler, I really need to tell you something.”

“What is it?”

“Just put the wine down on the counter, and sit down for a minute.”

“Is something wrong?” he asked as he placed the wine on the counter. We both turned to walk into the living room, and I was dreading every second of it.

“Sounds like there’s something wrong,” he continued. “I was worried that this might happen.”

“That what might happen?” I asked.

“That this would be too good to be true, and now you want to end it?”

I was completely shocked by his words. It was as if all of my insecurities had been for nothing, and I had been worried for no reason. It was as clear as day that he liked me, and I was terrified of what his reaction would be. Actually, I probably already knew what his reaction would be, and it would devastate what we had going.

“I don’t want to end it at all,” I replied. “As a matter of fact, the time I’ve spent with you has been some of the best time I’ve ever spent with anyone.”

“Only some of the best?” he asked with a sarcastic smile. “I was hoping for the best.”

I chuckled in return, allowing myself to drift away from reality for a moment and dream about what might be possible if I didn’t have such bad news for him. I didn’t want to be the reason for any stress in his life – I had initially wanted to be the perfect release for him. Now I was going to become the problem.

“Tyler,” I began, “I really don’t know how to put this, so I’ll just lay it out there for you.”

“What’s wrong?”

“A journalist stopped by here earlier today, his name –”

Tyler cut me off and said, “I hate journalists. They’re always sticking their nose into other people’s business and putting it out into the world as entertainment. They like to take someone’s tragedy and force the world to experience it…spread it like sickness.”

“Tyler, this is really important,” I said, “the journalist who stopped by here, his name was Adam Horton.
